12/30 - UW-WHITEWATER 63, GEORGE FOX 54: Warhawks Overtake Bruins for 3rd Place in Surf 'n' Slam
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A second-half shooting slump proved to be the undoing of the George Fox University Bruins as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks rallied for a 63-54 win over the Bruins in the third-place game of the Surf 'n' Slam Women's Basketball Tournament Monday afternoon (Dec. 30) here at Point Loma Nazarene University.
The Bruins shot .469 (15-32) in the first half in taking a 30-25 lead, but dipped to only .296 (8-27) in the second half as the Warhawks outscored the Bruins 38-24. As a result, George Fox finished 4th in the 8-team tournament.
Kim Leith led the Bruins with 16 points, while Kellie Thomas added 12 and Darby Cave 10. Sarah Myhre came off the bench to score 9 points and grab a game-high 9 rebounds. Amy Fitch passed out 4 assists.
Cathy Rossi led all scorers with 22 points for Whitewater, with Leah Thyne and Nya Geschke adding 11 apiece. Thyne had 8 rebounds for the Warhawks, who controlled the boards 44-40. Thyne and Rossi had 3 assists each.
George Fox fell to 5-4 overall while Wisconsin-Whitewater climbed to 6-3. Scores from the other three tournament games were unavailable.
The Bruins, having completed their non-conference schedule, now turn their attention to Northwest Conference play, making the eastern Washington trip this coming weekend. First up is Whitman College on Friday, Jan. 3, at 6:00 p.m. in Walla Walla, followed by the men's game at 8:00 p.m. The Bruins will visit Whitworth College in Spokane on Saturday.
