11/21 - GEORGE FOX 62, EVERGREEN 55: Bruins Overcome Slow Start to Squash Geoducks
PORTLAND, Ore. - After a sluggish start that saw them down by 8 at the half and as much as 13 early in the second half, the George Fox University Bruins recovered in time to rally for a season-opening 62-55 win over the Evergreen State College Geoducks Friday night here in the Concordia University-Portland Women's Basketball Classic.
The Bruins shot only .242 in the first half (8-33) while the Geoducks hit .500 (12-24) in taking a 30-22 lead into the break. After Evergreen hit two shots, one a 3-pointer, to open the second half, the George Fox defense, which forced 29 turnovers in the game, tightened up and the shots began to fall for the Bruins. The Bruins also shot 21 free throws, making 12, in the second half, compared to a 1-2 half at the line for the Geoducks.
Darby Cave and Sarah Myhre led the Bruins with 13 points apiece, with Kim Leith adding 12 and Kellie Thomas 10. Cave had 8 rebounds and Myhre and Amy Fitch pulled down 7 as the Bruins edged the Geoducks 43-40 on the boards. Thomas had 4 assists and 4 steals, and Fitch also had 4 steals.
Christi Pendergrass had 18 for Evergreen and Alicia Riddle added 12. Heather Hyde with 9 and Pendergrass with 8 led the Geoducks on the boards, and Pendergrass had 3 assists.
George Fox (1-0) takes on host Concordia-Portland Saturday at 7:30 p.m., while Evergreen (1-4) plays Pacific University, which defeated Concordia in Friday's second game, at 5:30 p.m.
