11/22 - GEORGE FOX 76, CONCORDIA 62: Bruins Never Trail in Overpowering Cavaliers
PORTLAND, Ore. - After three early ties, the George Fox University Bruins went on a 24-9 run to take a 30-15 lead midway through the first half, and the Bruins never led by less than 9 points the rest of the way in cruising to a 76-62 win over the Concordia University-Portland Cavaliers in the Concordia Women's Basketball Classic here Saturday night.
Sparked by 11 first-half points from Kellie Thomas, the Bruins built up a 44-27 halftime lead and were never seriously threatened throughout the second half. The Bruins shot .500 from the field in the second half and hit 7 of 10 free throws to stymie the Cavs any time the host team made a run. The largest margin of the game came with 3:22 left when Kim Leith sank a pair of free throws for a 73-52 GFU lead.
Darby Cave led the Bruins with 19 points, sinking 9-12 from the field, while Thomas had 15 and Leith 12. Cave and Erin Powers had 9 rebounds apiece and Amy Fitch pulled down 8 as the Bruins held a sizeable margin on the boards, 49-28. Fitch had a game-high 7 assists as the Bruins racked up 26 assists on 29 field goals, one short of George Fox single-game record.
Katie Atkins had 18 points, Annie Obrist 11, and Karla Finn 10 for the Cavaliers. Atkins, Leigh-Anne Durham, and Christy Rickert had 5 rebounds each, and Atkins had 4 assists.
George Fox is now 2-0 on the season and Concordia is 1-4. The Bruins travel to Minnesota next weekend to play some of the best D-III competition in the country in the Elite West Region Invitational. On Saturday, Nov. 29, the Bruins play Carleton College at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., game time at 1:00 p.m. PDT. On Sunday, Nov. 30, the Bruins take on St. Thomas at Carleton in Northfield, Minn., that game at 3:00 PDT.
