Scott Rueck (Oregon State '91) is 150-65 (.698) to date in his 9th season as a college head coach, all at George Fox. He notched his 150th win when the Bruins defeated Whitman 62-55 in overtime in Walla Walla, Wash., on Jan. 7. He was NWC Coach of the Year in 1999-2000 and Co-Coach of the Year in 2000-01. * Clark Honorable Mention for NWC "Player of the Week"
Liz Clark was all over the boards for the Bruins as they went 1-1 in their Northwest Conference opening weekend, receiving honorable mention for NWC "Player of the Week" for Jan. 3-9. In a 62-55 overtime win at Whitman on Friday, she had 16 points on 5-14 from the field (1-3 on 3's) and 5-6 from the line, with a career-high 19 rebounds (tied for GFU's 7th-best ever in a game), 1 assist, and 4 steals. In a 60-53 loss at #14 Whitworth on Saturday, she scored 4 points on 2-7 from the field (0-3 on 3's), but hit the boards for 11 rebounds, with 1 blocked shot and 2 steals. For the week, in 2 games, she scored 20 points (10.0) on 7-21 (.333) from the field, 1-6 (.167) on 3's, and 5-6 (.833) from the line, with 30 rebounds (15.0), 1 assist, 1 blocked shot, and 6 steals.
* Coach Rueck Hits 150-Win Milestone at Whitman
George Fox coach Scott Rueck picked up his 150th win when the Bruins knocked off the Whitman Missionaries 62-55 in overtime on Jan. 7 in their Northwest Conference opener. The 35-year-old coach is 150-65 to date in his 9th season at George Fox, with winning records in each of his eight previous years at the school. Rueck's 50th win came on Nov. 26, 1999, an 84-70 win over Cal State-Hayward in Newberg, and his 100th was on Dec. 12, 2001, a 78-68 win over Northwest in the Concordia-Portland Tournament. He is now just 12 wins away from the record for coaching wins held by Craig Taylor, now the George Fox director of athletics, of 162 (1981-93). Rueck's .698 winning percentage is best for any George Fox women's cage coach.
* Bruins Break 3-Point Field Goal Attempts Record (Again!)
For the second time this season, the Bruins established a team record for 3-point field goal attempts when they fired up 33 (making 7) in their 60-53 setback to 14th-ranked Whitworth in Spokane, Wash., on Jan. 8. Coming into the season, the record was 31 at Lewis & Clark on Feb. 8, 2000, but the Bruins broke that for the first time this season when they went 14-32 vs. Neumann in the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., on Dec. 31. George Fox ranks 3rd nationally in 3-pointers per game (9.00).
* Leith, Thomas Named (Belatedly) to Grand Canyon All-Tourney Team
They didn't know it at the time, but the Bruins' Kim Leith and Kellie Thomas were both named to the All-Tournament Team at the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix, Ariz., Dec. 30-31. The news did not get back to the team until after the Bruins had all ready checked out and headed back to Oregon. Thomas scored 23 points in the Bruins' 64-54 loss to a strong College of New Jersey team in the first round, then had 9 points and 4 rebounds in only 13 minutes in a 10-432 win over Neumann the next day. Leith missed the New Jersey game while attending a friend's funeral in Newberg, but stole the show by firing in 32, 30 in the first half, with 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 4 steals in 21 minutes vs. Neumann.
