NEWBERG, Ore. - With a No. 2 ranking in the West Region, the George Fox University Bruins have received a bye and will not play until the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball National Tournament on Saturday, March 5, when they will host the winner of a first-round game between Chapman University and California Lutheran University.
George Fox's second-round game will be played on campus in the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym. All fans, including faculty, staff, and students, must have tickets for all NCAA playoff games, and discount coupons are not applicable. The game time and ticket plans will be announced on Monday after university administrators confer with NCAA tournament representatives.
The Bruins, who are 20-5 overall, earned an automatic bid to the tournament by winning the Northwest Conference championship with a 14-2 league mark, a game ahead of Whitworth College. George Fox is the conference's lone representative in the 50-team field. Chapman received a Pool B bid as one of the nation's top independents, while Cal Lutheran was the champion of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Should the Bruins win their game, they would advance to a four-team sectional at a site to be determined. The other three brackets that would advance to the Bruins' sectional include Simpson (Iowa) at St. Benedict (Minn.) with the winner going to Buena Vista (Iowa); Mary Washington (Va.) at Maryville (Tenn.) with the winner going to Randolph-Macon (Va.); and Trinity (Texas) at Howard Payne (Texas) with the winner going to Greensboro (N.C.).
