BRUIN BITS:

* Taylor HM for NWC Player of the Week for Jan. 2-8
Junior wing Robin Taylor had a red-hot shooting week for the Bruins, receiving honorable mention for Northwest Conference Player of the Week for Jan. 2-8. In a 74-73 win at Biola, she had 16 points on 6-11 from the field (3-6 on threes) and 1-2 from the line, with 6 rebounds, 6 assists and a steal. In an 85-61 setback at Puget Sound, she had 15 points on 6-8 from the field (2-3 on threes) and 1-1 from the line, with 2 rebounds. In a 69-50 win at Pacific, she tallied 14 points on 5-10 shooting (0-2 on threes) and 4-4 from the line, with 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. For the week, she totaled 45 points (15.0 ppg) on 17-29 (.586) from the field, including 5-11 (.455) from three-point range, and 6-7 (.857) from the line, with 11 rebounds, 9 assists, and 4 steals. * Double-Doubles

* National Polls: Bruins Drop but Not Very Far
A sizzling night from the field by Puget Sound (59.6%) ended the Bruins' 11-game winning streak on Jan. 6 and possibly prevented them from moving into the top spot in the WBCA poll after Washington (Mo.) had lost earlier in the week, but the Bruins bounced back with decisive victories over Pacific and Linfield, preventing George Fox from falling very far in the national rankings.
In the USA Today/ESPN/Women's Basketball Coaches Association poll of Jan. 10, George Fox received 167 points and slipped from 2nd to 5th. Washington University of Missouri (11-1) fell out of the top spot to 3rd and was replaced by the University of Southern Maine (12-1).
In the D3hoops.com poll of Jan. 10, the Bruins fell from 4th to 6th with 456 points. Southern Maine stayed No. 1 with 601 points.

* Bruins Tie Record with 11 Straight Wins
George Fox's bid for a school-record 12th straight win was trumped by Puget Sound in Tacoma on Jan. 6 as the Loggers scorched the nets for a 59.6 shooting percentage in an 85-61 win. The Bruins thus ended up with the third 11-game winning streak in their history, this one running from Nov. 18-Jan. 2. The 2000-01 team won 11 in a row from Jan. 5-Feb. 10, and the 2001-02 team opened the season with 11 straight wins from Nov. 17-Jan. 2.

* Leith and Schmidt Post Record-Threatening Numbers at Linfield
Kim Leith and Tiffany Schmidt nearly put themselves in the record books with their performances in the Bruins' 75-43 win at Linfield on Jan. 10. Leith had 6 three-point field goals in 7 attempts while scoring her game-high 26 points, one goal short of the single-game record of 7 by Christy Brock vs. Whitman (Jan. 8, 1999). Schmidt posted 6 blocked shots, a number exceeded only four other times in Bruin history, three times by Shawna Chandler, who holds the record with 10 vs. Western Oregon (Jan. 11, 1983). Chandler also had 8 blocks vs. Concordia (Jan. 13, 1984) and 7 vs. Western Oregon (Dec. 12, 1984), and Tammy Lewis had 8 vs. Pacific (Feb. 23, 1989).

* Record-Setting Margins in Bruins' Games vs. Puget Sound and Linfield
The Bruins' 32-point margin of victory in their 75-43 win at Linfield on Jan. 10 was the most lop-sided score in the 55 games played between the Yamhill County rivals. The previous mark was 31 points in a 75-44 win by the Bruins in Newberg on Feb. 17, 1996 â?¦ "Turnabout is fair play" could have been the story of the Bruins' 85-61 loss to Puget Sound in Tacoma on Jan. 6. Last year, the Bruins pinned the Loggers with a 22-point setback, 67-45 in Tacoma on Feb. 18, the widest margin of victory in any game played between the two. The Loggers eclipsed that this time around with their 24-point win in their 22nd meeting.

* Career Lists: Leith Climbs to 6th in All-Time Points
Kim Leith scored 61 points in the Bruins' last three games, giving her 1,219 for her career and moving her past Liz Stephens (1,197, 1992-96) into 6th on the all-time scoring list. In 5th is Susie Davis (1,274, 1983-87) ... She was 11-19 on 3-pointers and ranks 5th in career 3-point pct. (.363, 189-520) ... She was 10-12 on free throws and is 2nd in career free throw pct. (.804, 181-225) to Christy Brock (.811, 77-95, 1998-99) ... She had 5 assists and now has 213, 9th all-time. Ahead are Liz Clark (218, 2001-05) and Melinda Day (220), 1981-85) ...
