12/2 - GEORGE FOX 58, PUGET SOUND 50: Postwomen Deliver as Bruins Upset No. 17 Loggers
TACOMA, Wash. - With post players Katy Campbell and Melissa Marek-Farris combining for 27 points and 22 rebounds, George Fox University Bruins built up a big early lead and hung on to upset the 17th-ranked University of Puget Sound Loggers 58-50 in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game Saturday night here at Memorial Fieldhouse.
A layup by Robin Taylor and a three-pointer by MaryAnne Samples got the Bruins off to an early 5-0 lead, and with the Loggers hitting only one of their first 18 field goal attempts, they were able to stretch that lead to a comfortable margin. Elise Kuenzi came off the bench to score on a jumper, a rebound, and a layup in the space of 67 seconds, boosting the Bruin lead to 18-6 with 5:27 left in the half. A three by Nicole Hudson from the top of the key gave the Bruins their largest lead at 28-14 with 1:10 to go, but the Loggers cut it to 28-19 at the half when Allison Craven banked in a desperation three-pointer from halfcourt at the buzzer.
The Bruins scored the first seven points of the second half to build their lead to 16 at 35-19 on a conventional three-point play by Marek-Farris three minutes into the period. Jaime Hubka boosted the lead to 20 when she sank a three from the left wing with 12:37 left for a 42-22 Bruin advantage before the Loggers went on an 8-0 run, cutting the deficit to 42-30 on a pair of free throws by Karen Chase with 10:17 to go. Another basket by Marek-Farris ended the run, but the Loggers stayed close by hitting five of six at one point, including three three-pointers. Shelby Ramirez brought the Loggers within five at 55-50 on a trey with 1:14 left, but Campbell hit a free throw and a layup to push the Bruin lead to 58-50 with 35 seconds left, and the visitors dribbled out the clock after collaring a final rebound.
Marek-Farris scored a game-high 15 points, hitting 7-8 from the field, and had nine rebounds and three blocked shots, while Campbell scored 12, all in the second half, had her second double-double of the season with a career-high 13 rebounds, and passed out five assists. The Bruins shot .411 from the field (23-56) and won the battle of the boards 42-37.
Chase posted a double-double for the Loggers with a team-leading 14 points and 10 rebounds, including eight on the offensive end, and Craven added 10 points. The Loggers were held to only .311 (19-61) from the floor.
