12/17 - UW-WHITEWATER 53, GEORGE FOX 47: Warhawks Rally Late to Beat Bruins in Hawaii
HONOLULU, Hawaii - A 10-0 run over the final five minutes of the game enabled the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks to rally for a 53-47 win over the George Fox University Bruins in the Hoop-n-Surf Classic women's basketball tournament Sunday afternoon here at the Kaiser High School gymnasium.
George Fox took an early 7-2 lead behind a three-point play by B.B. Gardner and a pair of buckets by Robin Taylor before Whitewater got rolling. The Warhawks took their first lead on a jumper by Tiffany Morton to make it 17-15 Whitewater with 9:53 to go, and they stretched it to 33-27 at the break on a layup by Rachel Woolever with 10 seconds left. Taylor's 12 first-half points kept the Bruins close.
Taylor hit a pair of three-point field goals to bookend a 10-0 run that gave the Bruins a 37-33 lead at the start of the second half. The Bruins took their largest lead at 44-38 on a three by Jaime Hubka with 11:42 left in the game, and were still up 47-43 after a free throw by Elise Kuenzi with 7:06 to go before going cold the rest of the way.
Lindsay Buechner hit a jumper with five minutes left to start the Whitewater comeback, then completed a three-point play with 3:45 remaining to put the Warhawks ahead for good 48-47. After two missed shots and a turnover by the Bruins, Woolever banked in a three from the top of the key with 36 seconds left to stretch the Whitewater lead, and Nicole Bundy iced the game with two free throws with nine seconds left.
Taylor led all scorers with 20 points, and also had seven rebounds and four steals. Katy Campbell had a game-high 14 rebounds, and Gardner passed out five assists. The Bruins wound up shooting .327 (17-52) from the field.
Buechner was the only Warhawk in double figures with 14, and also had eight rebounds. Morton pulled down 11 boards as Whitewater held a 42-35 edge in rebounds. The Warhawks shot .351 (20-57) from the field.
George Fox (4-4) will be out to end a three-game losing streak Monday when the Bruins meet Bridgewater College of Virginia (6-0), ranked 16th nationally, at 8 p.m. Pacific time (6 p.m. in Hawaii) at McKinley High School. Wisconsin-Whitewater (7-3) takes on Siena Heights College Monday at 2 p.m. (Hawaii time).
