2/11/2008 - Bruins to "Think Pink" and Celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Feb. 16
NEWBERG, Ore. - George Fox University's men's and women's basketball teams will join forces this Saturday, Feb. 16, to participate in the "Think Pink" campaign for breast cancer awareness, as well as to celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day, as a part of the Bruins' basketball doubleheader that evening in the Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.
Pacific University will provide the Northwest Conference competition for the women's game at 6:00 p.m. and the men's game at 8:00 p.m. The first 150 fans to arrive at the games will receive pink wristbands, anyone wearing pink will get in free with a $2.00 donation to the Breast Cancer Fund, and all women under the age of 18 will be admitted free.
Joining the George Fox basketball teams as sponsors for the evening's events are three area businesses: Newberg Ford, West Coast Bank, and Technocom.
The "Think Pink" initiative is a global, unified effort by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. George Fox University is one of over 900 schools nationally that will be taking part in the campaign, which officially runs from Feb. 8-17, but teams may participate at any time.
In conjunction with "Think Pink," George Fox will be celebrating the 22nd Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day by honoring its senior women student-athletes from all eight of the Bruin varsity women's sports at halftime of the men's basketball game. Awards will be presented to 24 outstanding women student-athletes.
This award celebration is one of more than 1,000 events taking place across the country for National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Congress has proclaimed this national day each year since 1987 as a time to recognize the progress of girls and women in sports, and to acknowledge the benefits that sports and fitness activities can bring to the lives of all girls and women.
In addition to the awards celebration, there will be some competition activities for girls and women during halftime of the women's game, as well as raffle prizes to be given away.
