3/15/2008 - GFU WOMEN'S SPRING INVITATIONAL: Bruins Hold Big Lead after Day 1 in Arizona
PEORIA, Ariz. - Halfway through the George Fox University Women's Spring Invitational Golf Tournament, the host Bruins have a 26-stroke lead over their nearest competitor after the first day of play here at the Westbrook Village Golf Course's Vistas course.
The Bruins carded a score of 332 on a sunny but windy day, the best 18-hole score in the two-year history of the young program, on the par 73, 5,804 yard course. Their previous best was a 335 on the second day of the Northwest Conference Fall Classic last year. George Fox is well ahead of the 358 by Nebraska Wesleyan University and the 376 by the University of Redlands. The tournament will conclude Sunday with tee time scheduled for 8:00 a.m.
Leading the Bruins and the whole event after the first day with a 41-39=80 is Brittany Zefkeles. The Bruins have the top four places individually, as Zefkeles is followed by Mandy Cameron with a 43-40=83, Brianna Nap with a 42-42=84, and Whitney Clunes with a 45-40=85. Amber Edwards has a 43-43=86 to lead NWU and Staci Walsh's 50-42=92 is the best score for Redlands.
