4/6/2008 - TACOMA INVITATIONAL: Bruins Rally to Edge Boxers by One Stroke

Tacoma Invitational Final Results

TACOMA, Wash. - Led by medalist Brittany Zefkeles, the George Fox University Bruins rallied from five strokes back after the first day to edge the Pacific University Boxers 711 to 712 to win the two-day Tacoma Invitational women's golf tournament hosted by the University of Puget Sound Sunday here at the Fort Lewis Golf Course.

George Fox's two-day score was 364-347=711, while Pacific had a 363-349=712.  Host and first-day leader Puget Sound slipped to third with a 359-373=732, and Pacific Lutheran University was fourth with a 396-399=795.

Zefkeles, who was one stroke of the pace after Saturday's round with an 88, shot an 84 on Sunday for a final score of 172, two strokes ahead of teammate Brianna Nap (88-86=174) and two Pacific players, Kelly Hartley (90-84=174) and Lindsey Huston (90-84=174).  Zefkeles, Hartley, Huston, and Angela Grossklaus of PLU tied for the best round of the match on Sunday with their 84's.  Grossklaus (91-84=175) and Sarah Bicker of UPS (87-88=175) tied for fifth.

Other counting scores for the victorious Bruins on Sunday came from Mandy Cameron (93-85=178), who placed seventh, and Whitney Clunes (95-92=187), who was 11th.  Nicole Hudson was 12th (95-94=189).

"Our team played solid, every player improving on their score, as we fired a team score on Sunday of 347 that was 17 strokes lower than the 364 of the first day," said Bruins coach MaryJo McCloskey.  "Coming from behind and winning felt like a huge accomplishment for our very young team.  Pacific is the favorite to win the conference championship, and they had not lost a tournament since our own Invitational on our home course in early October.

"I was extremely proud of our players today, and despite the showery weather - at some points in the round on Sunday, we had heavy hail and rain showers - it was just a fun day on the course!  We are playing with some great momentum and confidence as we go into our last two weeks of practice."

The Northwest Conference Championship is next for the Bruins on Saturday-Sunday, Apr. 19-20, at the Aspen Lakes Golf Course in Sisters, Ore.
