BANKS, Ore. - Led by Whitney Clunes, who carded a 92, the George Fox University Bruins opened their second season of women's intercollegiate golf competition in fine fashion with a third-place finish in the Pacific University 5-Way Tournament Sunday afternoon here at the Quail Valley Golf Course.
Under second-year coach MaryJo McCloskey, the Bruins shot 373 as a team on the par-72 course, trailing host Pacific, which shot a 362, and Linfield College with a 369. Willamette University was fourth with 428, while Lewis & Clark had only player entered in the event. Medalist honors went to Brynn Hurdus of Linfield with an 83.
Clunes shot a 47-45=92 to finish 7th, while Mandy Cameron (43-50=93) and Nicole Hudson (48-45=93) were among a four-way tie for 8th. Brittany Zefkeles shot a 46-49=95 to tie for 12th and complete the Bruins' scoring.
While playing in the tournament, the Bruins were also raising money in support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research. Technocom, Inc., a total communication technology provider based in Wilsonville, Ore., offered $10 for each par and birdie that was made by a George Fox player, resulting in a contribution of $200 to the Foundation after the Bruins recorded two birdies and 18 pars.
The Bruins return to action Friday in the Linfield 5-Way Tournament at the Michelbrook Country Club in McMinnville, Ore. Tee time is set for 1:00 p.m.
