10/7 - GEORGE FOX INVITATIONAL: Bruins Win Multi-Team Tournament for First Time
NEWBERG, Ore. - There's no place like home, and that sentiment was certainly true for the George Fox University women's golf team Sunday afternoon as the Bruins captured the first multi-team tournament in the program's two-year history with a score of 365 in the GFU Women's Invitational here at the Chehalem Glenn Golf Course.
Playing on a course rated the most challenging of all of Oregon's public courses, and with a late afternoon rain shower soaking the field, the Bruins finished 10 strokes ahead of Linfield College, which carded a 375. Pacific University was third with a score of 399, and Willamette University was fourth with a 448.
Medalist honors went to Linfield's Brynn Hurdus, who shot a 42-44=86 to edge George Fox's Brittany Zefkeles, who carded a 40-47=87. Another stroke back in third was Shawnie Dakan of Linfield, who had a 41-47=88.
Other counting scores for George Fox were Brianna Nap with a 43-47=90, tying for fourth place; Mandy Cameron at 44-49=93, tying for sixth; and Christine Collier at 45-50=95, tying for eighth. Nicole Hudson, despite a sprained ankle, shot a 52-44=96, tying for the best score of the day on the difficult back nine.
George Fox had tied Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a dual match last year in Peoria, Ariz., and had posted three third-place finishes in multi-team events this fall, their best finishes in two years before recording their initial tournament win Sunday.
The Bruins return to action next Sunday and Monday, Oct. 14-15, hosting the Bruin Women's Coast Invitational at two different courses along the Oregon coast. The first round on Sunday will be held at the Gearhart Golf Links, teeing off at 12:00 noon, and the second round on Monday will be at the Astoria Golf and Country Club, starting at 10:30 a.m.
