Results

NORTH PLAINS, Ore. - Experience - specifically national tournament experience and veteran leadership - overtook youth Monday as the nationally-ranked University of California-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs rallied to defeat the George Fox University Bruins 716-739 in a women's golf dual match here at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club's Ghost Creek course.

Under rainy and wet conditions on a course rated as one of the top 100 public courses in the country, the Slugs fired an impressive team score of 348 and overcame an eight-stroke deficit after Sunday's round, while the Bruins dropped to a 379 second-day score. Jessie Lewis of UCSC fired a low round of 41-38=79 Monday to capture medalist honors with a two-day score of 166, and Halley Sutton was right behind with a 44-39=83 to take second with a collective score of 172.

The Bruins' Brianna Nap, who led with an 84 after the first round, held on for third place, shooting a 49-45=94 to finish at 178. Nicole Hudson and Mandy Cameron tied for fifth with scores of 187, Hudson shooting a second-day score of 48-47=95 and Cameron a 52-46=98. Whitney Clunes had the Bruins' best round on Monday, carding a 47-45=92 and finishing at 192.

The UCSC match was the second dual match the Bruins have played in their two-year history. Last year, they tied with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a match played in Peoria, Ariz.

The final competition of the fall for the Bruins is the Northwest Conference Fall Classic coming up Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 20-21, at the Wildhorse Golf Course in Pendleton, Ore., and hosted by Whitman College. Tee times are set for 12:00 noon on Saturday and 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. Scores of the Fall Classic count one-quarter toward determining the NWC champion; the NWC Spring Classic counts an additional quarter, and the NWC Championship counts one-half.
