BRUIN BITS:
* Cardwell HM for NWC Defensive Player of the Week
Goalkeeper Jessica Cardwell (Fr., Fall Creek, Ore.) received Honorable Mention for Northwest Conference Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 11-17 after posting one shutout and a career high in saves in another game as the Bruins went 2-1. Ina 2-0 win over Pacific on Wednesday, she had 4 saves while facing 13 shots, 4 on goal, in her 3rd shutout of the season. In a 3-0 loss to Whitman in Saturday, she made 8 saves while facing 18 shots, 11 on goal. In a 4-1 upset of #6 Whitworth on Sunday, she made a personal-best 21 saves while facing 44 shots, 23 on goal. For the week, in 270 minutes, she faced 65 shots, 38 on goal, and made 33 saves while allowing only 3 scores. She ranks 2nd in the NWC in goalie saves.
* Alexander Sets Single-Game Record for Assists with 3 vs. Whitworth
Sparking the Bruins to a 4-1 upset victory over the 6th-ranked Whitworth Pirates on Oct. 17, freshman forward Julie Alexander established a new George Fox record for assists in one game with an assist on each of the Bruins' first three goals.
Alexander crossed from the right corner of the keeper's box to Katlynn Tuttle, who shot the ball into the left corner of the net for the Bruins' first score at 29:52 in the first half. Three minutes later, Alexander passed from the right sideline to Bethany Zirschky coming down the middle for another goal. At 41:36, Alexander sent a long pass from the right side to the front of the net, where Emily Atkinson headed it home, giving the Bruins an insurmountable 3-0 lead.
The previous best of two assists in a game had been accomplished numerous times before, the most recent by Kiersten Luginbill and Brittany Anselmi in a 6-0 win over Cascade on Sept. 10 this season in Newberg.
* Bruins Come Out of "Hinge of Fate" with 3-2 Record
Before the 2004 season began, George Fox women's soccer coach Andy Hetherington pointed to a string of mid-season games that could make or break his team's season and dubbed it "the hinge of fate; how we play during that stretch of five games in eight days will determine how successful our season will be."
If the Bruins' performance during that stretch are any indication, they may well be back on their way into contention in the Northwest Conference soon. The team went 3-2, starting with a tough 2-1 loss at Pacific Lutheran on Oct. 9. They bounced back with a 4-1 win over Yamhill County rival Linfield on Oct. 10 and a 2-0 blanking of Pacific on Oct. 13, both at home. On Oct. 16, Whitman scored two goals in the final five minutes to break open a close game and defeat the Bruins 3-0 in Newberg. Concluding the "hinge of fate" on a high note, the Bruins stunned 6th-ranked Whitworth 4-1 on Oct. 17.
At 7-8, the Bruins have the most wins in a season since going 13-5 in 2000.
