10/21 - WHITMAN 2, GEORGE FOX 0: Berndt Boosts Missionaries by Bruins with Two Goals

Box Score

WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Kristen Berndt scored a pair of goals, one in each half, as the Whitman College Missionaries took a 2-0 win over the visiting George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match Sunday afternoon here at the Whitman soccer complex.

The Missionaries got on the board in the first half when DeeDee McCormick rebounded a shot and sent a short cross to Berndt, who headed it home 21:52 into the game. That slim 1-0 margin stood until late in the game, when Berndt scored an insurance goal with a long shot into the corner of the net after an assist from Alysse Ginkel at the 87:08 mark. The pair of goals raised Berndt's total to 10 for the season.

The best George Fox scoring opportunity came in the 65th minute when Amber Stevens, who had six shots for the Bruins, burst through the Missionary defense and fired a rocket that Porter deflected with a quick dive to her left, preserving her league-leading seventh shutout of the season. She had nine saves in all, while Bruin keeper Jessica Cardwell had four saves.

George Fox out-shot Whitman 20-17 overall and 9-6 in shots on goal in the evenly-contested match. Each team had only one corner kick.

George Fox (9-6-1, NWC 6-5-1) heads home to entertain Lewis & Clark College Saturday in a conference game at 11:00 a.m. Whitman (8-5-3, NWC 7-3-2) hosts Pacific Lutheran University Saturday, also at 11:00 a.m.
