10/27 - GEORGE FOX 4, LEWIS & CLARK 1: Bruins Clinch Winning Season with Win over Pios

Box Score

NEWBERG, Ore. - Amber Stevens scored 14 seconds into the game and Jenny McKinsey added two more first-half goals, sparking George Fox University to a 4-1 win over the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers that secured the Bruins' first winning season in seven year in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match Saturday here at Morse Field.

The Bruins are now 10-6-1 overall and 7-5-1 in the conference, the first winning season for head coach Andy Hetherington and the most wins in his six years with the program. The last winning record the Bruins had was a 13-5 mark in 2000, the next-to-last season under the Bruins' only previous coach, Byron Shenk. The Pioneers fell to 2-12-2 overall and 2-11-1 in the conference.

George Fox struck quickly in the game's opening seconds as Jessica McMorran passed to Stevens near the right corner of the penalty box, and she lofted a high shot that just eluded leaping keeper Nora Germano and drifted into the net. It was her team-leading eighth goal of the year.

McKinsey's two goals enabled her to tie Stevens for the team lead. Her first goal came at 7:36 when she eluded the Pio defense and drove around Germano for a shot into a wide-open net. Her second came at 17:53 on a penalty kick after a Lewis & Clark defender was called for a hand ball in the penalty box.

The Bruins added a fourth goal at 52:31 in the second half when Megan Servoss served a ball into a mass of players near the goal mouth, and Kirsten Cardwell came up with a header for her seventh score of the season. That offset the Pioneers' lone goal, an unassisted score by Lisa Housman, her seventh of the year, only 48 seconds from the end.

Although the Bruins dominated on the scoreboard, the game was still fairly contested. George Fox held a 19-15 edge in shots, 11-8 in shots on goal, and 3-1 in corner kicks. Jessica Cardwell had four saves in 65 minutes and Sally Alway had two in 25 minutes in goal for the Bruins, while Germano had six in 76 minutes and Karyne Sander one in 14 minutes for the Pios.

George Fox plays again Sunday against Pacific University at home at 12:00 noon, while Lewis & Clark hosts Whitworth University Thursday at 4:00 p.m.
