ANDY HETHERINGTONHead Coach(2002-) |
Now entering his seventh season as the head coach of the George Fox University women’s soccer program, Andy Hetherington has brought the Bruins along to a point of serious competitiveness in the rugged Northwest Conference, a league which always features several teams among the best in the nation.
Hetherington took over the George Fox position late in the summer of 2002 after a seven-month search for a coach and had virtually no time to recruit, leaving him with a number of inexperienced players who struggled through a 1-15 season. Since then, however, the Bruins have shown steady improvement.
The Bruins’ rebuilding program under Hetherington came to fruition in 2007. The team’s 12-6-2 record was their first winning season since a 13-5 record in 2000, and their third-place tie in the conference with a 9-5-2 mark was the highest finish since the 2000 team also placed third. With seven starters returning, five of whom earned All-NWC honors, the Bruins appear poised to be a significant factor in 2008 NWC race.
Only the second coach in the history of George Fox women’s soccer, Hetherington has fashioned a 37-72-6 record (.348) in six years since coming to the university from Aloha (Ore.) High School. He had taken the head women’s position at Aloha in March 2002 when the opportunity to get into college coaching knocked. He replaced Byron Shenk, the only coach the program had known since its inception in 1991, who resigned to devote more time to his position as a George Fox assistant athletic trainer and instructor.
Hetherington served as assistant men’s head coach at Catlin Gabel (Ore.) High School from 1991-92, head men’s coach at Corbett (Ore.) High School from 1993-96, and head women’s coach at Valley Catholic (Ore.) High from 1998-2001. All together, his teams had a cumulative record of 123-20-5.
At Catlin Gabel, Hetherington’s teams went 20-0 in 1991 and 19-0 in 1992, both teams winning District 1 and state championship titles. Establishing the program at Corbett, he guided the team to a 31-11-3 overall record and made the playoffs in each of his three years there. At Valley Catholic, where he was 53-9-2 in four years, his 1998, 2000, and 2001 teams each won the Tri-Valley League and reached the quarterfinals of the state Class 3A playoffs, while the 1999 squad was league runner-up and reached the second round of the state tournament.
Hetherington hopes to develop that kind of winning tradition again at George Fox. “My aim,” he says, “is to make the women’s soccer program not only more competitive, but also more attractive. I am an offensive-minded coach with a total soccer mentality that is designed to develop attacking scenarios from anywhere on the field.”
Hetherington, 50, is a native of Manchester, England, where he attended St. John’s College. He played soccer semi-professionally in both England and France from 1978-86 before coming to the United States. He and his wife Kimberly and their three children reside in Portland, Ore.
