2/18 - LEWIS & CLARK 7, GEORGE FOX 2: Bruins Drop Rain-Plagued Home Opener to Pios
NEWBERG, Ore. - In a match that took over five hours to play because of a rain delay, the George Fox University Bruins dropped their first home match of the season 7-2 to the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers in Northwest Conference women's tennis Sunday afternoon here at the GFU campus courts.
The teams managed to get the doubles in before the rains came, with Lewis & Clark sweeping all three. The Pios' Lisa Harunaga and Liz Nguyen defeated the Bruins' Valerie Ring and Lindsay Hagler 8-5 at No. 1, Clio Beatty and Maggie Peach downed Alayna Shaw and Rebecca Crinnion 8-6 at No. 2, and Asami Kimura and Teresa Kiemnec edged Leilani Jackson and Linsey Wages 8-6 at No. 3.
After the rain stopped and the courts were squeegeed off, the singles resumed, with the first four going to the Pios. Harunaga downed Ring 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1, Nguyen swept Hagler 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2, Beatty dropped Jackson 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3, and Peach overcame Brittany Ekstrom 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4. The Bruins took the final two singles as Crinnion edged Alysia Yamasaki 6-7 (7-4), 7-6 (7-0), (10-5) at No. 5, and Shaw conquered Kiemnec 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
George Fox (0-3, NWC 0-2) travels to eastern Washington next weekend, first taking on Whitman College Friday at 6 p.m. Lewis & Clark (1-1, NWC 1-1) is also on that swing, playing Whitworth College Friday at 3 p.m.
