2/24 - WHITWORTH 7, GEORGE FOX 2: Bruins Get Two Singles Wins but Fall to Pirates
SPOKANE, Wash. - Lindsay Hagler and Rebecca Crinnion picked up singles victories but that was all the George Fox University Bruins could muster for the "wins" column as they dropped a 7-2 decision to the Whitworth College Pirates in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match here Saturday afternoon.
Whitworth opened the match by taking all three doubles as Linh Aven and Katie Troxell thumped Hagler and Valerie Ring 8-1 at No. 1, Betsy Johnson and Taryn Smith took the measure of Alayna Shaw and Crinnion 8-3 at No. 2, and Rachael McCoola and Angela Anegon edged Brittany Ekstrom and Leilani Jackson 8-6 at No. 3.
Hagler posted a 2-6, 6-3, (10-7) win over Aven at No. 2 singles, and Crinnion downed Troxell 4-6, 6-4, (10-2) at No. 3 for the Bruins' two wins. The Pirates prevailed in the other four matches as McCoola nipped Ring 6-4, 4-6, (10-4) at No. 1, Johnson defeated Jackson in a pro set 8-2 at No. 4, Smith swept Ekstrom 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5, and Justine Hays closed out Shaw 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6.
George Fox (0-5, NWC 0-4) returns home to host Linfield College Friday at 2:30 p.m. Whitworth (2-2, NWC 2-2) visits the University of Puget Sound Friday at 4 p.m.
