3/9 - WILLAMETTE 6, GEORGE FOX 3: Bruins Split Singles but Lose Doubles to Bearcats
SALEM, Ore. - Getting off to a strong start by sweeping all three doubles matches, the Willamette University Bearcats went on to defeat the visiting George Fox University Bruins 6-3 in Northwest Conference women's tennis action Friday evening here at the Courthouse Tennis Club.
The Bearcats' Susan Butler combined with Alaine Anderson to win the #1 doubles 8-3 over the Bruins' Valerie Ring and Lindsay Hagler, Emily Elliott and Abby Funabiki downed Alayna Shaw and Rebecca Crinnion 8-5 at #2, and Christy Newell and Becca Younger took the measure of Brittany Ekstrom and Leilani Jackson 8-5 at #3, giving the home team an all-but-insurmountable lead.
In singles, Butler won at #1 as she defeated Ring 6-2, 6-4, Anderson dropped Hagler 6-3, 6-4 at #2, and Younger conquered Shaw 6-3, 6-1 at #6. Bruin victories came from Crinnion over Elliott 6-2, 6-4 at #3, Jackson over Funabiki 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 at #4, and Ekstrom over Newell 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 at #5.
The Bruins fell to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in the conference, while the Bearcats improved to 3-6 overall, including 3-4 in the NWC. George Fox hosts Pacific Lutheran University Saturday at 10 a.m. in a match moved indoors to the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton. Willamette is also home on Saturday to take on the University of Puget Sound in a match scheduled for the Willamette courts at 11 a.m. Weather conditions may force a delayed start to 1 p.m. or cause the match to be moved indoors at 4 p.m. at the Courthouse Tennis Club.
