3/16 - PUGET SOUND 6, GEORGE FOX 3: Short-Handed Loggers Have Enough to Get by Bruins
NEWBERG, Ore. - Despite having only five players who were able to make it to the match, the University of Puget Sound Loggers still had enough to pull out a 6-3 win over the George Fox University Bruins in Northwest Conference women's tennis Friday afternoon here at the GFU campus courts.
Puget Sound is in the midst of its spring break and a few members of its tennis team were expected to fly into Portland from their homes Friday for the match, but a number of those plans obviously fell through. As a result, the Loggers had to default the #3 doubles and #6 singles matches. The only match George Fox won on the court was at #5 singles, in which Brittany Ekstrom defeated Rochelle Hebert 6-2, 6-2.
The Loggers, who are currently second in the conference standings, got doubles victories from Courtney Dunham and Alyssa Sidoff at #1 over Valerie Ring and Lindsay Hagler 8-4, and from Katie Schultz and Hebert at #2 over Alayna Shaw and Leilani Jackson 8-4.
UPS singles winners were Dunham over Ring 6-1, 6-4 at #1, Sidoff over Hagler 6-0, 6-2 at #2, Schultz over Rebecca Crinnion 6-2, 6-0 at #3, and Ashley Spencer over Jackson 6-4, 6-3 at #4.
George Fox (1-9, NWC 1-8) hosts Treasure Valley Community College Saturday at 10 a.m. in a match that will not count on the Bruins' record. Puget Sound (9-1, NWC 8-1) visits Pacific University Saturday at 11 a.m.
