3/18 - LEWIS & CLARK 5, GEORGE FOX 4: Pios Pull Out Win over Bruins in Last Singles Match
PORTLAND, Ore. - With the match all squared at 4-4, it was the Lewis & Clark Pioneers who snuck off with the 5-4 win by taking the #4 singles over the George Fox University Bruins in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match Sunday here at the Lewis & Clark courts.
Lewis & Clark had opened the match by taking two of the three doubles contests. Pioneer wins came from Lisa Harunaga and Liz Nguyen over the Bruins' Valerie Ring and Lindsay Hagler 8-4 at #1, and by Clio Beatty and Maggie Peach over Alayna Shaw and Shanna Lesire 8-2 at #2. The Bruins were victorious at #3 as Brittany Ekstrom and Leilani Jackson downed Teresa Kiemnec and Asami Kimura 8-5.
In singles, the Bruins got wins from Ring over Nguyen 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) at #2, Ekstrom over Alysia Yamasaki 7-5, 6-2 at #5, and Shaw over Kiemnec 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 at #6. The Pios' winners were Harunaga over Hagler 6-0, 6-2 at #1, Beatty over Rebecca Crinnion 6-1, 6-1 at #3 and, with the match hanging in the balance, Peach defeating Jackson 6-3, 6-2 to clinch the win for the home team.
George Fox (1-10, NWC 1-9), with spring break looming, will not play again until Saturday, Mar. 31, when the Bruins host Whitworth College at 10 a.m. and Whitman College at 3:30 p.m. Lewis & Clark (4-7, NWC 4-6) plays Whittier College in Los Angeles Saturday at 3:30 p.m. as part of a three-match trip to southern California.
