4/13 - WILLAMETTE 8, GEORGE FOX 1: Bruins Bow to Bearcats in Final Home Match
NEWBERG, Ore. - Playing at home for the final time in the 2007 season, the George Fox University Bruins bowed to the Willamette University Bearcats 8-1 in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match Friday afternoon here at the GFU campus courts.
The doubles matches were very competitive, but the Bearcats came away with the advantage by taking all three. Tiffany Kam and Alaine Anderson edged the Bruins' Valerie Ring and Lindsay Hagler 9-8 (8-6) at No. 1, Susan Butler and Becca Younger nipped Brittany Ekstrom and Leilani Jackson 8-6 at No. 2, and Abby Funabiki and Emily Elliott knocked off Alayna Shaw and Linsey Wages 8-5 at No. 3.
The Bearcats took all but the No. 4 singles, which was won by the Bruins' Ekstrom over Younger 6-1, 6-1. Willamette wins went to Kam over Ring 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 1, Butler over Hagler 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2, Anderson over Rebecca Crinnion 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, Funabiki over Jackson 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5, and Elliott over Kelsie Howell 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
George Fox (1-15, NWC 1-14) closes out its season Saturday with a 10 a.m. match at Pacific Lutheran University. Willamette (7-12, NWC 6-9), which clinched the sixth and final NWC Tournament playoff spot, concludes its regular season Saturday at the University of Puget Sound at 1 p.m.
