Admission Requirements

Applicants seeking admission to the Continuing Teaching License program must hold an approved Master's degree such as a master of arts in teaching (MAT) degree from an accredited college or university, with a minimum GPA of 3.0. For applicants with an undergraduate college degree only, the applicant must complete a master's or higher degree including the approved CTL program. In addition, applicants must complete the following to be considered for admission to the program:

  • Educational Foundations and Leadership application form and application fee
  • Demonstrate having met the 10 competencies required for the program
  • Verification of valid Oregon teaching license
  • Verification of three years of successful experience at least half time in one or more approved schools in Oregon
  • Completed Teachers Standards and Practices Character Questionnaire


Transfer Credit

No transfer credit is allowed toward the Continuing Teaching License program. Transferability of credits earned at this institution and transferred to another is at the discretion of the receiving institution. Consult the registrar's office for information on eligibility of transfer credit.

Residence Requirements

All 6 hours required for the Continuing Teaching License program must be taken in resident study at George Fox University. All work leading to the license program must be completed within seven years from the time of matriculation. Extension of this limit requires approval of the Educational Foundations and Leadership (EDFL) Faculty. However, only one such extension may be considered due to special circumstances, such as ill health. Reinstatement to the program after withdrawal requires Admissions Committee action and may subject the student to additional requirements for the degree.

Course Requirements

The Continuing Teaching License program is generally ?? years in length with 6 semester hours of course work required as a minimum for graduation. Of the total hours required for the program, 3 are required seminar hours and 3 are approved elective hours (based on professional goals as specified below).

In addition to the core requirements, students must complete Praxis content area exam required by Oregon Teachers Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC).

Graduation Requirements

In order to graduate with the Continuing Teaching License students must:

  • Satisfactorily complete a minimum of 6 semester hours with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Achieve no grade lower than a B in all core courses. If a grade of a B- or lower is received in a designated course, that course must be retaken (for more specific information, please refer to the student handbook)

Approved Electives (3 hours)
Students must select 3 hours of EDFL coursework that meets one of the following conditions:
  • Adds depth to one's professional repertoire by addressing one or more of the 10 advanced competencies
  • Leads to a new endorsement (ESOL, reading, library media, or a secondary content area such as math)
  • Leads to a new authorization level (early childhood, elementary, middle level, high school); or leads to the Initial Administrative License
