Before Scholarship Competition. If you are invited to compete at Scholarship Competition, you will need to write an essay that will evaluate your interest in chemistry as well as your ability to communicate chemistry concepts. Please bring your essay with you to the scholarship competition. The topic is as follows:
How can the study of chemistry be applied to a specific problem such as one of the following? Choose one of the problems and discuss how chemistry can be used to address it.
Global climate change
Molecular-level understanding of diseases such as HIV or cancer
The detection of biological or nuclear materials that could serve as weapons of mass destruction
On the day of the competition, you will:
Take an exam consisting of multiple-choice and short answer problems that test your basic chemistry knowledge and reasoning skills. Non-programmable calculators are permitted for the exam and will be provided if you do not bring your own. Notes or other learning aides are not permitted during the exam.
Participate in an interview with a member of the chemistry department.
