Field Experience represents the culminating project-based experience earning the student the Trauma Response Services post-graduate certificate. During Field Experience, the student will engage in a 9 to 12 month project designed to advance service delivery and/or research related to improving trauma response services. Post-graduate certificate candidates may opt to partner with government or non-government organizations, including the Trauma Response Institute, engaged in research or service delivery projects in progress, or design their own project to be developed and implemented within a designated setting. Students may also opt to collaborate together in the completion of a project as long as each student has clearly identified responsibilities. Successful completion of Field Experience requires completion of the project as detailed in the candidate's Field Experience Project Application including a written summary of the project suitable for publication submission. Students will participate in Field Experience project work groups during the Fall and Spring academic terms as all projects will be completed under the supervision of the TRI director.
Students are only eligible to enroll in Field Experience if they have completed each of the following:
- The TRI's Trauma Response Services Post-Graduate Certificate Application and been accepted into the specialty
- All prerequisites and/or take all prerequisites concurrent with Field Experience
The field experience application will be completed during the field experience class time. This application includes a proposal of the student's intended field experience project.
The Field Experience Application is comprised of 3 elements:
-Self Assessment: An examination of one's academic, social and emotional readiness. Applicants will take a series of compassion fatigue inventories and The Field Placement Current Functioning Inventories (Berardi, A.) in preparation for an interview with the TRI director and one additional TRI faculty/instructor. These instruments will also be used in Field Experience as part of the compassion fatigue, recruitment and field supervision educational units.
-Field Experience Project Plan: The student will define and describe the project to be completed during the next 9 to 12 months including the desired outcome(s). The proposal must be developed in conjunction with a trauma response agency or related setting, and submitted according to the specifications as outlined in the Field Experience Project Application. Applicants will be encouraged to develop their plan with the assistance of the TRI faculty.
-Signed Documents: Including but not limited to a signed copy of agreement to abide by one's code of ethics commensurate with the degree one is seeking or the profession(s) in which the participant practices; signed copy of agreement to abide by trauma response code(s) of ethics; and signed proof of malpractice insurance.
Block C courses will meet concurrently in seminar format meeting for 4 1-day seminars in the Fall semester and 4 1-day seminars in the Spring semester. In addition to covering course content, the seminar sessions will include student progress on their Field Experience Project agenda.
Students may begin Block C in either Fall or Spring term since progression through Field Experience is heavily dependent upon self-chosen projects in conjunction with trauma response organizations.
