New ASC election format

ASC election time is rapidly approaching. On March 17, candidates will be in Bauman Auditorium, trying to convince the student body that they are the one who can best serve the Fox community. But instead of taking a chapel time to listen to these speeches, as has been the routine in past years, they will be taking place on a Monday night. Don't worry, there is plenty of incentive to attend the elections.
In order to attract students, those who attend will receive a chapel credit. That is just the beginning, though. In addition to the chapel credit, ASC will be providing free pizza and there will be a raffle for prizes, including a Nintendo Wii and "The Office" on DVD.
Heather Eslinger, ASC supreme court chief justice, heads up all of the events and activities surrounding ASC elections. She says, "The speeches are usually held during a chapel time, but this year they were scheduled for a Friday Greenroom time, and this just wasn't what we had in mind, so we decided to try something new."
Another change about this year's elections is that the Presidential candidates will participate in a short debate rather than giving traditional speeches.
Candidates for seven ASC positions are required to stand in front of the audience and give a speech or, in the President's case, a debate: President, Vice President, Treasurer, Activities Director, Communications Director, Supreme Court Chief Justice, and Publicity Director. Positions such as Chaplain and Christian Services are appointed.
The committee that appoints these two positions will make their decision at the same time the ballots are being counted for the elected positions, this way, all of the winners are announced at the same time,” Eslinger explains about the different kinds of ASC jobs.
Whether or not students will attend this evening event is a completely different issue. The lure of free pizza and a chance to win prizes is enough for some, but for others, it is dependent upon other things. "I would go if my friends were going," says Jennifer Bruinier, freshman.
A lot of it would depend upon how much homework I had that night or if I had other things going on,
explains Jacob Ewing, also a freshman. The fact that chapel credit is being offered, however, is a big pull.
"Free pizza and chapel credit? Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be there, is sophomore, Earl Cotte's, opinion.
All of this considered, make it a point to attend ASC election speeches on Monday, March 17 at 7:30 PM in the Bauman Auditorium. Please note that on the school calendar it says this event will take place on Friday, March 14, but this is incorrect. Voting will take place directly after the speeches while pizza is being served and also the next Tuesday and Wednesday at lunch and dinner in the SUB.
