A Family First
When Karina Ramirez steps onto the George Fox University campus this fall, she will embark on a journey no one in her family has yet taken.
Ramirez, who will graduate from Forest Grove High School (Ore.) this spring, is the first from her family to attend college. She is attending George Fox through the university's Act Six leadership and scholarship initiative, a full-ride scholarship designed for emerging urban leaders who want to use their college education to make a difference on campus and in their communities at home.
Ramirez is one of 11 scholars selected for the Act Six cadre for the 2009-10 academic year. She plans to study sociology or a health field at George Fox. "I love the fact I have so many options here," she says. "I also plan to start a (Folkorico) dance team, run track and get involved in student government. Needless to say, I'm really looking forward to college."
The News-Times newspaper of Forest Grove published a feature story about Ramirez in its May 13, 2009 edition. To read her story, visit the newspaper's online edition.
