George Fox sends students on study abroad trips in MayMore than 200 George Fox University students are on international study trips to Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and New Zealand this month.
The college study abroad tours are part of the university’s Juniors Abroad program. Since 1987, the program has sent third- and fourth-year students on three-week overseas study trips led by professors. Excursions have reached every continent except Antarctica. George Fox pays transportation and program costs; students pay room and board. Each trip holds preparation classes during the spring semester.
A brief description of this year’s trips:Thailand and Cambodia
Students on this trip will visit Umphang Wildlife Sanctuary, Angkor Wat, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and the Grand Palace in Bangkok. They will also visit the Choeung Ek Memorial (The Killing Fields). Special attention will be given to examining the impact of freedom, or lack thereof, on the history, religious faith, multi-ethnic diversity and societal life of Thailand and Cambodia.
Rome to Paris
This trip will focus on the influence of the early Church and Renaissance history and its effect on culture today. Students will begin the trip in Rome and travel to Florence, Pompeii and Assisi. They will travel north to the French cities of Nice, Aix-en-Provence, Nimes, Arles and Avignon, and then on to Paris. The trip will end with a visit to the Beaches of Normandy and the American Cemetery.
Students on this trip will study the history of the two major cultural groups of New Zealand, the Pakeha and the Maori. They will travel throughout portions of the North and South islands, and visit historical sites such as Christchurch, Russell and Auckland. They will climb the Franz Josef Glacier, explore a penguin conservatory and visit a Maori village and the National Museum.
This trip will go through nine Italian cities, with students visiting the Colosseum, Roman Forum, the Catacombs, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Duomo, St. Mark’s Square and the Trevi Fountain. In addition, students will be able to see the artwork of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael.
Ireland and Scotland
The focus of this trip is the history of spirituality in Ireland and Scotland. Students will begin the trip in Dublin, where they will see the Book of Kells. They will travel through Kildare, Glendalough, Kells, Newgrange, Clonmacnoise, Westmeath and Galway. In Scotland, students will visit the island of Iona, and then travel on to Edinburgh, where they will see Edinburgh Castle and St. Giles Cathedral.

This trip will focus on the art, literature and history of England and France. Students will visit some of the most important art museums in the world, including the Louvre and Unterlinden Museum. They will see Roman sites at Rheims and Bath, medieval towns and castles at Warwick and York and explore London and Paris.
Students on this trip will explore three areas of study: ancient Greek culture and religion, modern Greek culture and the apostle Paul’s journey through Greece. Students will visit three Olympic stadiums, and go to religious sites such as Vergina and Meteora. They will also visit Philippi, Thessaloniki, Berea, Athens and Corinth. Students will have the opportunity to climb down Mount Olympus and enjoy the waters of the Aegean Sea.
China and Tibet
Students on this trip will explore the many sights of Beijing, including the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall. They will also go on a cruise down the Yangtze River and sleep in yak-hair tents at the base camp of Mount Everest.
This adventure trip will include snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands, mountain biking through the Andes Mountains and canoeing and hiking in the Amazon Rainforest. Students will explore Ecuador’s natural biodiversity, as well as the diversity of the different cultures in Ecuador.
This integration trip is primarily for psychology majors, and is designed to inspire students to combine their faith in God with their knowledge of psychology as they serve and learn from at-risk girls who were rescued from a life of poverty. Students will build relationships with the girls and examine the impact of poverty and intervention on girls’ health, well-being and hope for the future.
Students on this trip will travel to Johannesburg and Pretoria, the western Cape and KwaZulu Natal. Students will gain a better understanding of South Africa’s colonial past, its nineteenth-century conflicts and the rise and fall of apartheid in the twentieth century. This trip will introduce students to the main contours of South African history and bring them face-to-face with that history through in-country field trips, tours and personal interactions.
