From New Zealand to New Delhi to Newberg
After visiting four continents, the Amazing Race comes to George Fox’s Tilikum Retreat Center
The Amazing Race’s 30,000-mile world tour made a high-flying visit to George Fox University’s Tilikum Center for Retreats and Outdoor Ministries in 2008. With a $1 million prize on the line, three teams competed high above the ground on Tilikum’s challenge course to collect clues to their next destination. The season finale for the Emmy-winning reality show was filmed in May and aired Dec. 7.
Activities at Tilikum
Tilikum runs year-round programs for outside groups, hosting overnight retreats, Elderhostels, summer camps and challenge-course activities.
High Adventure, Personal Growth
Tilikum's challenge course is a collection of ropes, cables, wooden beams, tires, and logs assembled to provide activities for individual growth and team building. Some of the challenge course elements are attached to 100-year-old Douglas Fir trees as high as 120 feet off the ground.
George Fox University and Tilikum
A ministry of George Fox University, Tilikum is an interdenominational retreat, educational, and camping center located in the Chehalem Valley seven miles northwest of Newberg. Its pastoral setting includes 92 acres of tree-covered hills and green meadows, with a 15-acre lake, hiking trails, overnight facilities, and a recreation building.
Tilikum is a frequent destination for George Fox students, who come for weekend retreats, to use the challenge course, and to take classes, including wilderness survival, ornithology, and photography.
The camp also provides a laboratory for students who are minoring in Christian camping at George Fox. Each year, many of the summer day camp staff are George Fox students.
