Minthorn Hall

Location

Built in 1885, Minthorn Hall is the oldest and only first-generation building left on campus. Today this building houses the English program and the Center for Study Abroad. George Fox offers nearly 50 different travel abroad locations, and more than 50% of undergraduate students will travel overseas before graduation.

Minthorn was originally built as a dormitory for Friends Pacific Academy, the predecessor of George Fox University. Former U.S. President Herbert Hoover attended the academy as a young boy, and it’s believed he may have lived in the dorm during this time.

In 1892, the hall was moved 10 blocks to its current location, accomplished by rolling the building on logs behind horses. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is named for Quakers Henry John and Laura Minthorn, early supporters of the college and Hoover’s aunt and uncle.
