Policies and Procedures
Off-Campus Study Eligibility and Procedures
Requirements
Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to be eligible for off-campus programs. Exceptions may be made for students required to take a semester abroad by their major. Selection will be based on the academic purposes involved, grade point average, campus citizenship, and previous educational experiences.
Credits
Because students remain enrolled at George Fox, courses taken in the selected program will appear on George Fox transcripts with a letter grade. Some courses may meet general education or major requirements. However, approval for such credit must be obtained from the registrar's office before the off-campus semester.
Costs
Students pay George Fox's standard tuition, room and board, and student fees. Costs typically cover air travel outside the United States, your tuition, and room and board expenses. The student usually needs to cover the cost of textbooks and other educational materials, travel to the point of departure from the U.S., visas (if required), and immunizations, depending on the individual program.
Surcharges apply in the case of programs with above-average costs. Consult the Center for Global Studies for more information.
Financial Aid
Since the student is officially a George Fox student, they continue to receive financial aid, but there are no student employment opportunities in these programs.
Deposits
The student is responsible to submit the initial deposit with his/her off-campus program. This will be credited to the student's account if the student is selected and attends the off-campus program. The student is responsible to pay the application fee. Please consult with the director of global studies for further information on deposits and application fees.
Airfare
Typically round trip airfare is included from the point of departure from the U.S. Unless the program makes travel arrangements, the student is responsible for this. These vary according to the individual programs. Please consult with the Center for Global Studies for specific information about flight arrangements and credit policies.
Passports
Passport applications for U.S. citizens will be available in Wood-Mar 204, or the Center for Global Studies (STV 123). Detailed instructions and lists of charges are on the passport application. You will need a copy of your ORIGINAL birth certificate, two passport-size photos and money. Completed applications and supporting documentation can be submitted at one of the official passport offices; the closest office to Newberg is the Dundee post office. Have your photos taken at any place that does passport photos. The Photo Company (99W across from Burger King) and Walgreens are two places close to campus that take passport photos. Visas are also required for some countries.
Application Deadlines - First Friday of spring semester for the upcoming academic year (both fall and spring semesters). Submit the George Fox off-campus application form to the Center for Global Studies.
Interest in a program not currently approved by GFU? Students are able to participate in other programs aside from those listed on the national and international programs webpages. However, such student would be asked to take a leave of absence from GFU during that semester. Once the student returns to campus the following semester, he/she would be re-enrolled as a GFU student. As well, transfer credits are not guaranteed until the student has worked that out with their academic advisor and the GFU Registrar's Office prior to their semester off-campus. See the frequently asked questions section for more. The same policy applies to any student who choses to study off-campus without going through the Center for Global Studies application process, regardless of the chosen off-campus study program.
