Veritas in Florianopolis
This program is offered in colloboration with Veritas Christian Study Abroad at the Universidad do Sul De Santa Catarina (UNISUL) in Florianopolis, Brazil. Florianopolis is located on the Island of Santa Catarina in the southern region of Brazil. Floripa is a modern and cosmopolitan city and yet is near over 42 beaches, rolling mountains, Atlantic reainforest, sand dunes and several off-shore islands.
Students are required to take a Religion and Culture course and an International Missions/Service-learning practicum taught by local Veritas staff. The remainder of the courses will be taken at UNISUL including a Portuguese language course.
* The Veritas Christian Study Abroad application should only be completed after being informed from the George Fox Director of Study Abroad that you are accepted for an off-campus study semester.
Students must be full-time undergraduates with junior or senior status, holding a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to apply. There is NO language requirement.
Because students remain enrolled at George Fox University while participating with Veritas, academic credit is awarded by George Fox University. Students will typically take 16 credit hours. Students will be required to attend two pre-departure meetings, complete an online course evaluation, and attend a re-entry meeting upon their return. Students must see the transfer credit specialist in the Registrars office BEFORE they begin their semester off-campus.
There are several excursions that are included in the program coast. These include a Santa Catarina Island Tour, a visit to the European inspired town of Blumenau, and a visit to the Catarinense Mountains that can include horseback riding, hiking, and white water rafting.
Students will live in homestays with Brazilian families. Students will be provided with breakfast and dinner (except on Veritas excursion days) and laundry service once per week for the official duration of the program. This is included in the Veritas program cost. All homestays are within walking distance or by public transportation to the UNISUL.
The student pays George Fox's standard tuition, room and board (14 meal plan), and student fees (an additional fee is required to attend some programs). Participants continue to receive financial aid, including scholarships, since they are officially George Fox students. Round trip airfare is additional.
