Veritas in San José

Program Overview
Costa Rica Veritas.jpgThis program is offered in colloboration with Veritas Christian Study Abroad at the Veritas University in San José, Costa Rica. San José, with a population of approximately 1.5 million people, is the "hub" of Costa Rica in every sense of the word. It is the cultural, economic and social center of the country where one can experience the hustle and bustle of daily life for more than half of Costa Rica's citizens.

Course Content
Students are required to take  International Missions/Service-learning practicum taught by local Veritas staff, and a beginning Spanish language courseata the University .  The remainder of the courses will be taken at Veritas University There is no language prerequiste except for Spanish Majors.  

The student will fill out two applications:
• George Fox off-campus application
• Veritas Christian Study Abroad application* (An application fee must accompany your application)

* The Veritas Christian Study Abroad application should only be completed after being informed from the George Fox Director of Study Abroad that you are accepted for an off-campus study semester.

Students must be full-time undergraduates with junior or senior status, holding a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to apply. APPROVED FOR SPANISH MAJORS.  There is NO language requirement for non-Spanish majors.

Because students remain enrolled at George Fox University while participating with Veritas, academic credit is awarded by George Fox. Students will typically take 16 credit hours. Students will be required to attend two pre-departure meetings, complete an online course evaluation, and attend a re-entry meeting upon their return. Students must see the transfer credit specialist in the Registrars office BEFORE they begin their semester off-campus.

Students will have the opportunity to participate in several excursions.  Which excursions are available depend on the semester.  Possible excursions include a visit to the Arenal Volcan and La Fortuna, a visit to Monteverde Biologica Cloud Forest Preserve (with a possible ride on the 130ft zip line, or a visit to the beaches of Manuel Anonio.

Students will live in homestays with Costa Rican families.  Students will be provided with two meals per day, breakfast and dinner, (except on Veritas excursion days) and laundry service once per week for the official duration of the program. This is included in the Veritas program cost.

The student pays George Fox's standard tuition, room and board (14 meal plan), and student fees (an additional fee is required to attend some programs).  Participants continue to receive financial aid, including scholarships, since they are officially George Fox students.  Round trip airfare is additional.
