Scholars' Semester in Oxford
In conjunction with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, George Fox students can participate in the Scholars' Semester in Oxford (SSO). Students enrolled in the SSO are granted Visiting Student status and as such are members of Oxford University. This gives them full access to the Bodleian Library and relevant faculty libraries, university lectures, as well as athletic teams and social organizations. Transcripts will be issued by Wycliffe Hall, one of more than 45 colleges and halls that comprise Oxford University.
Students select a primary and secondary tutorial course that is typically one-on-one with an Oxford professor. Students will also take a University Integrative Seminar and lecture course and a Centre for Scholarship and Christianity In Oxford (SCIO) lecture course, for a total of 17 credit hours.
The student will fill out two applications:
• George Fox off-campus application form (obtained from the Center for Study Abroad; or downloaded here).
• Scholars' Semester in Oxford application (to be completed online here). An application fee must accompany your application.
*The SSO application should only be completed after being informed from the Director of Study that you are accepted for an off-campus study semester.
Students must be full-time undergraduates with junior or senior status, holding a cumulative GPA of 3.7 or higher to apply. Note that this GPA requirement is higher than for other George Fox programs. There is NO language requirement.
Because students remain enrolled at George Fox while participating in SSO, 17 hours of academic credit is awarded by George Fox University. However, Wycliffe Hall will have final authority over all admissions, academic programs, and student behavior. Students will be required to attend two pre-departure meetings, complete an online course evaluation, and attend a re-entry meeting upon their return. Students must see the transfer credit specialist in the Registrars office BEFORE they begin their semester off-campus.
Students have the option to live at The Vines, a grand home on the crest of Headington Hill, a 35-minute walk into Oxford city center or a five-minute walk to the nearest bus stop, or at the Crick Road House, a 10-minute walk from the center of town (or five minutes to Wycliffe Hall). More information about SSO housing.
The student pays George Fox's standard tuition, room and board, and student fees and an additional fee for the Oxford program. Participants continue to receive financial aid, including scholarships, since they are officially George Fox students. Round trip airfare is additional. Since SSO does not include meals, the student's GFU account will be credited for a full meal plan.
