Spain (Spanish Majors/Minors)
Semester in Spain Program (Spanish Majors and Minors only)
George Fox University students may apply to study in Spain for one semester through a cooperative agreement with Trinity Christian College of Palos Heights, Ill. The Semester in Spain Program is designed primarily for students majoring or minoring in Spanish. Students study in Seville, Spain, and live in local homes while attending classes with students from Trinity and other colleges.
A Preliminary Course Request Form is sent to each student prior to his or her departure for Spain. Students choose their courses based on their previous Spanish language course work, with the approval of their advisor or the foreign language faculty. Besides Spanish language courses students can take courses in Spanish history, art, and culture. All courses are in Spanish.
Various activities and outings, such as concerts, theater productions, picnics, trips to the beach, sporting events, etc. will be offered throughout the semester. These activities are optional. Some activities will require only a nominal fee, some will be more expensive.
The student will fill out two applications:
George Fox off-campus application form (obtained from the Center for Study Abroad; or downloaded here).
Semester in Spain Program application (to be completed online here).
*The Semester in Spain Program application should only be completed after being informed from the Director of Study Abroad that you are accepted for an off-campus study semester.
Students must be full-time undergraduates with junior or senior status, holding a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to apply.
All Semester In Spain courses are offered for 4 semester hours of credit. Most students take four classes per semester for a total of 16 credit hours of course work. Some advanced students choose to take only three classes for a total of 12 credit hours. Students will be required to attend two pre-departure meetings, complete an online course evaluation, and attend a re-entry meeting upon their return. Students must see the transfer credit specialist in the Registrars office BEFORE they begin their semester off-campus.
Students live in Spanish homes in Seville. A student's Spanish family may consist of a couple or a single woman, with or without children. Students will be living with one, two, or sometimes three roommates from the Semester In Spain Program depending on the accommodations available. Students who are participating in our program along with a friend may request to live together in the same home assignment. Those requests are honored as much as possible.
The student pays George Fox's standard tuition, room and board, and student fees (an additional fee is required to attend some programs). Participants continue to receive financial aid, including scholarships, since they are officially George Fox students. Round trip airfare is additional.
