India Studies Program

The India Studies Program will NOT be offered for the 2015-16 academic year.

Program OverviewIndia
In conjunction with the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, George Fox students can participate in the India Studies Program (ISP), based at Bishop Appasamy College of Arts and Sciences, in the city of Coimbatore, in the state of Tamil Nadu. This program will challenge students to discover for themselves a variety of ways to address the needs of the poor and disenfranchised, acting as agents of salt and light in a broken world. The India Studies Program is structured to provide students with both immersion in a local community and broad exposure to a variety of peoples, places and customs in India including an extensive two-week travel portion of the program to provide students a close up look at India's diversity. Whether studying social work, theology, missions, art & design, communications, business, cultural studies or social sciences, there is a place for you at the India Studies Program!

Course content
Students will participate in two core courses designed to provide a broad overview of the historical, religious, geographical and economic landscape of India. Building on their basic understanding of India's past and contemporary realities, students will have opportunities to explore a variety of issues -poverty, social justice, rapid social change, religious pluralism - through the eyes and experience of Indian Christians.  Rounding out the semester experience, students will also have the opportunity to take courses in their major areas with Indian students and professors. Required and elective course descriptions can be read here.

Service Opportunity/Internship
The city of Coimbatore offers ample resources / opportunities for students to explore and function in the local setting (e.g., travel, eating, attendance at local cultural events) as well as a gateway to the larger Indian context:

Service-learning opportunities (variety of sites and services)
Church opportunities - worship, fellowship
Accessibility to other religious/faith traditions groups
Internship/field experience course opportunities
Recreation and entertainment opportunities
Access by rail and plane to all majors areas of India

The student will fill out two applications:
• George Fox off-campus application form (obtained from the Center for Study Abroad; or downloaded here). An application fee must accompany your application.
• The ISP application (to be completed online here). An application fee must accompany your application.

*The ISP application should only be completed after being informed from the Director of Study Abroad that you are accepted for an off-campus study semester.

Students must be full-time undergraduates with junior or senior status, holding a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to apply. There is NO language requirement.

Because students remain enrolled in their home institutions while participating in the ISP, academic credit is awarded by George Fox University. Students will be required to attend two pre-departure meetings, complete an online course evaluation, and attend a re-entry meeting upon their return. Students must see the transfer credit specialist in the Registrars office BEFORE they begin their semester off-campus.

Students live near the Bishop Appasamy campus in a housing unit for international students equipped with cooking and laundry facilities. Students prepare their own meals and arrangements will be made to provide cooking instructions for typical Indian dishes and assistance with shopping. Groceries stores are conveniently located and very reasonable. Public transportation is readily available and the housing unit is well located for student access to local culture.  For more information about ISP housing and student life, visit

The student pays George Fox's standard tuition, room and board, and student fees (an additional fee is required to attend some programs).  Participants continue to receive financial aid, including scholarships, since they are officially George Fox students.  Round trip airfare is additional.
