New Zealand-Fiji

Faculty: Kathy Weiss, Beth LaForce
Meeting Night: Wednesdaynewzealand

This course will explore New Zealand life and culture as compared to life and culture in Fiji. The indigenous people of both regions share a common ancestry, but developed different cultures on their respective “islands”. The exploration of the North Island of New Zealand will include meetings with those involved with education, cultural experiences and explore the vast geographical diversity of New Zealand. Our trip will tour Maori and Pakeha cultural and historic sites including:  Maori cultural centers in Rotorua, federal government buildings and the Te Papa-the National Museum in Wellington, and the Auckland Museum.  The geography of New Zealand is diverse and adds many unique plants and animals that can be observed. It also allows for many opportunities for hiking, black water rafting and other outdoor activities and sports. The still active volcanoes, well known from their role in the Lord of the Rings films, and geothermal activity around Rotorua provide unique sites to explore during our time in New Zealand. The last leg of this trip will take us to the beaches of Fiji. As we travel around the island in addition to beaches we will enjoy snorkeling, sand boarding, wild life preserves, mud baths, and a rainforest trek complete with waterfalls for swimming. Transportation will include busing, sea kayaks, hiking, boating and bamboo rafting. Cultural shows and living in a village will help enrich our understanding of this interesting culture. No trip would be complete without a little shopping and learning about Fiji's cannibal past. The highlight will be a chance to work with village people on a painting project.
