This course will focus on the natural and cultural diversity of South Africa.  Students will experience the breathtaking natural beauty of South Africa by exploring the country’s interior and coastal regions.  Our trip will begin with a coastal visit to the country’s crown jewel, Cape Town.  While in Cape Town students will hike to Table Mountain, visit to a penguin colony at Boulders Beach, and enjoy a trip to Cape Point, a Natural World Heritage Site.  Students will also spend two days working on a community service project and partake in a Cape Malay cooking class.  In addition, our study of South African culture will include a visit to another World Heritage Site, Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned.  Next students will travel by air to the eastern coastal region where we will enjoy a sunset boat cruise and Zulu cultural evening at Isimangoliso World Heritage Site.  Our stay on the eastern coast would not be complete without a game drive and elephant interaction.

Following our coastal stays, we will travel into the interior arriving in Johannesburg.  Here students will tour the Soweto township (Mandela’s home) and Hector Pieterson Memorial as we study Apartheid.  We also hope to experience Jo’berg’s history and culture with visits to Constitution Hill and Museum Africa.  Next we will stop by the Cradle of Humankind as we travel to Lesedi Cultural Village where students will be exposed to South African tribal culture.  Our trip concludes with a stay at Pilanesberg National Park, a game reserve where we hope to see Africa’s “Big Five”.   Finally, students will have the opportunity to interact with several indigenous groups through in-home meals, a service project at an orphanage, and daily conversations with our guides.

IMMUNIZATIONS WILL BE REQUIRED.
