Rome to Madrid
Faculty: Steve Grant, Dale Isaak
Class Night: Tuesday
STUDENT COST: $2000
This European Study Tour will begin in Rome and will focus on the art, history and architecture of ancient Rome. The Forum, the Coliseum, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, the Pantheon, as well as several notable churches and various sites in Rome will help us see the influence of pre-Christian, early Christian thinking and the influence of the Roman Empire on Western Culture.
From Rome, we will travel to Assisi, the home of St. Francis and then on to the most notable city of the Renaissance; Florence, where we will take in The David, see Michelangelo Park, see the open air markets of Florence and the Ponte Veccio Bridge.
Following our time in Assisi and Florence, we will head northwest and visit an area known as Cinque Terra where will have the choice of hiking some of the most scenic trails in all of Italy or enjoying the beach at Monterosso…or both! Our time in Monterosso will be followed by a scenic train ride along the Italian and French Riviera as we travel to the city of Nice. From Nice, we will visit Monte Carlo and a small coastal community known as Villa Franche sur Mer and will spend the remainder of the day seeing the village and enjoying the beach.
Our next stop will be Antibes, where we will do some easy hiking to get to a breathtaking view of the French Riviera. From Antibes, our route will take us to Avagnon and Arles where we’ll get to see the lasting impact of the Roman Empire’s influence in southern France. From there, we will visit Nimes, (where denim was originated). Leaving Nimes, we will travel southward to Spain and make our first stop in the beautiful city of Barcelona. Sites in Barcelona will include Las Rambles, Montjuic Castle, the Basilica of the Sagrada and Bogutell Beach. Our next stop will be the city of Madrid. There, we will see the Prado Museum, Puerta del Sol and the Royal Palace of Madrid, and we’ll enjoy a bike tour of the city and see sites the normal traveler will miss.
