Adventure - Art - Culture - Juniors Abroad at George Fox

England/France

Faculty: Caitlin Corning, Tim Timmerman
Class Meeting: Wednesday, 6:30 - 9:00 PM

England and France have many layers of history.  From Roman baths and theaters to Medieval cathedrals, from Renaissance palaces to Versailles, from Big Ben to the Eiffel Tower, this trip will allow students to explore some of the famous cities and sites of England and France while learning about the history and culture of these areas.

Our trip will begin in London where we will visit the British Museum, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben, and the Tower of London.  Students will have time to visit Shakespeare’s Globe, take in shows in the West End, visit Kensington Palace or the Imperial War Museum. We will also travel to Dover to see the white cliffs, a medieval castle and World War II sites. Next, it is off to Bath where we will explore the ancient Rome baths and get to walk the Georgian streets where Jane Austen spent time. There will even be the opportunity to enjoy high tea in the Pump Room.  We will have special access to Stonehenge where we will enter the stone circle rather than view it from afar. Then it will be off to the English coast to see Roman villas and explore Portsmouth, home of the Tudor ship the Mary Rose and Nelson’s flagship the HMS Victory.

Then, we will travel French Rivera to visit Nice and the Principality of Monaco before heading to Avignon to see the marvelous Roman and Medieval sites including the Pont du Gard aqueduct and the best preserved Roman theatre in Western Europe.  We will drive through the beautiful French countryside to Lyon and visit Le Chambon, a village famous for its nonviolent resistance to Nazism during World War 2. Finally, we will spend four nights in Paris. We will visit the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triomphe, Versailles and Notre Dame. There will be plenty of free time to explore Paris.
