Faculty: Kevin Jones
Class Meeting: Wednesday, 6:30 - 9:00 PM
This trip is built around exploring the history and culture of Cuba and the southeast Mexican peninsula. The United States recently loosened the constraints on tourism with Cuba, which has opened the doors for an unprecedented cultural, artistic, and historical travel experience.
This course will study the culture and history of the southeast Mexican peninsula with trips to Cancun, Mexico and the country of Belize. The Mayan culture will be studied and explored in Belize with visits to numerous ruins and ancient places of interest. A two-day trip to the oceanographic mystery of the Blue Hole will create an opportunity to study the undersea world of the Mexican waters through sailing, snorkeling, and cave exploration.
From Belize, we will fly to Havana, Cuba where we will embark on a seven-day tour of the island. Our island adventure will include numerous cultural exchanges including stops at Havana University and the prestigious ISA (Instituto Superior de Arte). At both institutions we will interact with local students and professors. We will also engage in a literary journey as we engage in a Hemmingway tour and visit many of the spots that inspired much of his writing.
