This trip will be to the two island nations of New Zealand and Fiji. the core tenants of this course will be outdoors/adventure sports, cultural engagement, and examination of the unique flora, fauna, and geography of the destinations. During the classroom portion of this course we will cover materials associated with the following activities, sites, and experiences in order to provide a base of knowledge and understanding prior to departing for the trip.
New Zealand offers a distinctive ecosystem with plants and animals unique to the islands while also being comprised of some of the most breathtaking scenery of any country in the world. Additionally the island boasts a plethora of adventure sports and outdoor activities that we will explore while on the North Island. This will include, but is not limited to: Street Luge, Bungee Jumping, Black Water Rafting, Skydiving, Various Hikes, Spelunking, and climbing Mt. Victoria. On the cultural side we will look at the influence of western culture, the Maori people, and other regional influences through visits to Maori cultural sites, Various Museums, Hobbiton and other Lord of the Rings sites, and many more.
As the later stretch of the trip transitions to Fiji we will explore the more equatorial eco system with a hike through the rain forest, a Bamboo rafting trip, hot springs, and snorkeling opportunities. We will also engage in some local cultural and historical activities; specifically a Fire Walking and Island Dance Show, a visit to the capital city, and stops at a few museums and sites of interest.
