Teaching the Big Ideas: Ethics

Spring 2013, online

Facilitated by Gary Sehorn, Assistant Professor of Education

There will be 3-4 synchronous sessions supplemented by asynchronous collaboration and sharing. There are core concepts that are essential components in many graduate and undergraduate courses and programs, such as leadership, vocation and diversity. This faculty learning community will explore the teaching of ethics, but it is envisioned as the first of a series of such offerings, each focused on a different core concept. Participants will share how they approach ethics and learn from other faculty as they share. Together, the group will consider how various understandings of faith integration inform the teaching of ethics in various settings and will cobble together resources and suggestions to be shared with all GFU faculty. The online format will provide access to those who typically cannot attend PLC offerings, and this learning community will have the added benefit of allowing faculty who are not fluent in online teaching tools to experience and practice with the format in a collegial context.

The synchronous session dates and times will be set as a PLC.

Please complete and return application to Brenda Burg bburg@georgefox.edu by Monday December 10, 2012, 5:00 p.m.

Coffee and Conversation

Fall & Spring 2012-2013, Newberg

Facilitated by Gary Sehorn, Assistant Professor of Education

Faculty face plenty of “burrs under the saddle”– those persistent, annoying problems and challenges that seem to come with the work but drain an inordinate amount of time and energy. What are the guild secrets someone is keeping from you? Who has solved this problem or that, or at least found ways to shrink the negative impact? One specific persistent problem of practice will be the focus of each Coffee & Conversation session. Based upon requests, a topic will be announced, and all who have answers or questions (or both!) will be welcome to come and share with those who are “still looking for the answers to life’s persistent questions.”
