Global and Cultural Engagement
Fall and Spring 2011-2012, seven sessions across the school year; Newberg
Facilitated by Michael Bevis, Director of the English Language Institute, and Joel Perez, Dean of Transitions and Inclusion
The purpose of this faculty learning community is to create space for meaningful dialogue about global and cultural engagement as it relates to a students classroom experience. Specific attention will be given to practical steps that faculty can use to think about issues of global and cultural engagement as it relates to their classroom management and pedagogy. In addition faculty will understand the importance of global and cultural engagement related to being a Christ centered institution.
Application for Global and Cultural Engagement. Due date: September 8, 2011 5:00 p.m.
Meeting Dates: The first session meets Sept. 29th from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. The remaining dates will be set as a PLC.

Second Year Faculty PLC
Fall 2011, Newberg
Facilitated by: Patrick Allan, Provost and Karen Buchanan, Dean of Instruction
This Professional Learning Community (PLC) is designed to provide guidance and support for you, as second year faculty, to begin to prepare for your third year review. Using a workshop approach, participants will:
- Become familiar with portfolio requirements of the review process and create a plan for the preparation of the portfolio
- Read and review a number of texts on the integration of faith and teaching/learning
- Participate in collegial dialogue centered on group readings
- Create an integration of faith and teaching/learning essay that is a required part of your portfolio (feedback from colleagues and a writing mentor will be part of the process)
Meeting Dates: Mondays: 9/12, 9/26, 10/10, 10/24, 11/7, 11/29 – 3:40-5:00 p.m.

Blended Learning PLC
Spring 2012, Newberg - Meeting Dates: to be determine
Facilitated by: Karen Buchanan, Dean of Instruction and faculty colleagues
Blended learning has proven to be an effective model of course delivery. A number of recent studies site blended learning courses as the most popular modality when compared with face-to-face delivery and fully online delivery. This PLC is designed to offer faculty the opportunity to study the literature on blended learning and then apply best practices to the redesign of a face-to-face into a blended learning experience. The expectation is that participants will teach the blended learning course in a future semester and share their experiences with faculty colleagues.

Mobile Literacy PLC

Our learning community will explore ways in which digital strategies are increasing learning and we'll experiment with some mobile technologies for the classroom. we'll even take a look at how mobile technologies are trending for education. From theory to practice, our professional development community will test and prove how mobile technologies contribute to learning.

Teaching for Student Learning: Effective Strategies for the University Classroom

This PLC is designed to enhance your teaching, increase student learning and deepen your reflective practice. Participants will begin by reviewing current literature regarding how people learn and then apply that knowledge as they explore effective instructional and assessment design strategies in their coursework.

Thinking About Leadership and Higher Education: Multiple Perspectives, Liberal Ideas

Meets: M-F, 9:00 a.m.-Noon June 18-22, 2012 (location TBA)
This reading and discussion group will meet each morning from 9 – 12 for one week to discuss leadership and liberal education using a variety of readings from such authors as: Ella Baker, David Brooks, John Dewey, Emily Dickinson, Nicholas Farnham, Joseph Featherstone, Vaclav Havel, Martin Luther King, Lao-Tzu, Abraham Lincoln, Machiavelli, John Cardinal Newman, Martha Nussbaum, Parker Palmer, Plato, Karl Popper, Jedediah Purdy, Michael Sandel, Earl Shorris, Alexis De Tocqueville, Alfred North Whitehead, Virginia Wolf.
The purpose will be to think together about leadership and higher education across time and disciplines, and to see what we can learn about our common work here at George Fox.

Learning Environments for ALL our Students: Promoting Academic Success for Students with DisabilitiesPresented by: Rick Muthiah, Director of Academic Resource Center
Literature indicates that 11% of college students have disabilities and that a growing number of students with disabilities are entering post-secondary education. Most GFU faculty have had, or will have, students with visible or invisible disabilities.
The session will:
- touch on legal and moral obligations to provide services to students with disabilities
- discuss practical steps to provide accessible environments for students with disabilities
- invite discussion about how to better serve all our students

Creating e-Pubs for Education

What in the world is an e-Pub? Come and learn about how educators are able to create customized e-Pubs to support their coursework. E-Pubs can effectively incorporate documents, learning objects and library support materials in one space. They can often be used with mobile devices and e-book readers.

Managing Cooperative Learning Groups

We will be exploring cooperative and collaborative learning structures that enhance student learning.
The session would probably include (in collaborative ways):
- looking at what research says about the benefits of this learning
- some of the parameters to keep in mind to structure effective collaborative learning
- and then some modeling of structures and sharing among group members
