NEW BUSINESS

3.4 Social Responsibility Fund: Proposal: J. Vanier

Proposal: Donate $500 to ALS ice bucket challenge

Discussion:

-       Outcomes

  • Make a video of Central Committee doing the challenge

-       Decisions

  • Are we going to say we’re donating $500?
  • Do we want to donate to living water?
  • Bad idea? Good idea? Donate our own money?
    • Invite students do be in the video
    • Do it during the slip n slide and invite all students to donate
  • Feel weird about using student money
  • ¼ of the budget
    • should be requested by someone not on ASC
  • Would rather use personal money
    • Don’t think it’s right if someone on Central proposes it
  • Doesn’t support or help students
  • Logistically
    • Slip N slide; hose, buckets of ice, pouring on slip N slide
    • Throwing ice at freshmen
    • Sounds like so much work, J. Vanier wants to take it on

-       Actions

  • Make video of Central with the ice bucket
  • Use our own money and it won’t be a large controversy
    • Good talking point for figuring out our purpose of the fund
      • Not everyone will agree with our decisions this year
  • Revisit a bigger video if the entire student body gets challenged
  • In our video we will challenge another student government

Call to Question: M. Tarpley

3.6 Student Organizations: Budget Approval: T. Rene

Proposal: $187 for Students For Life club

Discussion:

            -Outcomes

  • They have a budget for flyers
    • Our stipulation for them being a club is that nothing graphic or harsh would be posted

            -Decisions

  • Careful about solicitation and their budget for flyers
  • We can revoke their club status if they don’t follow policy
    • We can revoke, but on probation, not refund receipts etc.
    • Check up on them at the club fair
    • No one seconded the motion after 3 minutes
      • They’re asking so little: annoying that we will be reimbursing for such little amounts
      • They were so passionate about this topic last year
      • Why aren’t they requesting well over $1000?
        • Budget doesn’t reflect constitution

Topic was revisited at the end of the meeting:

  • Numbers are too low
    • Passionate about the club but doesn’t match the budget
    • Too invested in it personally because it’s hard to prepresent students on this topic
      • Regret passing it last year
      • ASC should be able to make hard decisions like this one
      • Not comfortable supporting one side of an issue and not the other
        • Support all student sides
        • No strong opinion towards either side of the issue
        • Hard to vote on a club that’s never been one
        • ASC doesn’t represent ASC it represents the student body

            -Actions

  • We need to get settled as a team about this club to work effectively
  • They need to resubmit budget
  • Don’t agree with the club and they need to think bigger
  • Talk to them about flyers and Facebook page
