NEW BUSINESS

8.3 Academic Pursuit Fund: Proposal: M. Tarpley

Proposal: $878 for two students to attend Conference of the Society of Biblical Literature and American Academy of Religion

Discussion:

-       Outcomes

  • P. Anderson is speaking at conference
    • He sent in a letter of support for these students
  • Flying Spirit Airlines is pretty cheap
  •

-       Decisions

  • A lot of other schools don’t pay for transportation to events
    • We would have to set a precedent for other proposals
    • How would we handle transportation for all the other events?
    • Maybe set a limit for amount of travel cost allotted
      • $100?
    • This fund is to allow students to be able to go to on trips, and taking away travel costs would hinder a lot of students from going to conference
      • Want dollar to go a long way to help a lot of students
      • Fundraise for travel?
        • If you have the ambition to go to a conference like this, you should raise money for such things
    • The opportunity to travel to do something they wouldn’t be able to do anywhere in Oregon
      • Is that what our money should be spent on?
    • Blessing students with covering the cost of travel
      • The entrance fee is a blessing
    • We have an opportunity to bless a lot of students with this fund
      • We need to spend it wisely
    • Personal experience, being granted that much money was a lot
      • Felt like they could have fundraised a lot
      • These students have time to fundraise
      • Some students have never traveled before so it could be a great opportunity
  • These students have taken a great initiative to get the funding
    • Travel costs should be done
  • ASC shouldn’t be covering the entire proposal

-       Actions

  • Table proposal
    • M. Tarpley will do some research (on other schools) on some new stipulations of Academic Pursuit Fund and bring the proposal back next week

8.4 Activities: New Position: M. Kimmer

Proposal: Reinstate the Blue Zone Director position costing a stipend of $1500

Discussion:

-       Outcomes

  • Blue Zone under athletics would be more sustainable, but cannot happen at this point in time due to athletics budget finalization
  • S. Reed would be a head point person
  • M. Kimmer and other CC members are doing the contacts between athletics ASC and Sports Marketing
  • Now that we have Bruin Brawl we need someone to run it

-       Decisions

  • Makes sense to have four directors because we have the same amount of events plus Bruin Heritage
  • We will need others underneath the Blue Zone Director so there is someone at every game
    • Future conversations for hires and their stipends
  • A lot of work, need this Blue Zone Director in order to go forth with these big dreams
    • Hire people that don’t have time to fully invest in ASC, but want to be involved and spirited
  • How do we make sure that we have TOTAL control over Blue Zone position
    • Communication with Sports Marketing
    • Sports Marketing won’t have control over Blue Zone
      • We need to define Blue Zone first
    • We need to find a plan and execution for this position and tell Sports Marketing what we want
    • ASC is in charge, we get to choose what our students are doing
    •

-       Actions

  • Need to define Blue Zone
  • Will figure out how all that works with Blue Zone Coordinator
  • Will be inclusive about hiring

            -Decisions

  • Important to have
  • If Student Life thinks it’s important to have they should pay for it
    • Especially if it’s been something they’ve been pushing for it with the Haven course
    • Health & Counseling or Student Life should be paying for it
