11.6 DISCUSSION

Student Life VP Commuters- M. Pothoff

-       Proposed position in Student Life specific for commuters and intramurals

-       ASC would need to help fund this position

-       Collision of Welcome Weekend and ASC is difficult

-       ASC needs attention is August

-       Timing of Welcome Weekend is hard for any Student Life VP to hold

-       Half-time positions are more challenging because it’s hard someone gifted enough to take a half time job

-       Highly extroverted, organized, detail-oriented, programmatic

-       Road blocks?

  • Funding

Hard topics regarding posters in dorms

-       Student Life team takes issues seriously, and they can handle those issues with students

-       We can reply to alarming tweets, but private messages can be best instead of tweeting to everyone

Cameo night

-       Current movie that we could show at the Cameo: Gary Buhler, art teacher, has connection that would give us a deal on the movie

-       50 tickets for $500

-       It would be good to continue forward in making better connections with Newberg community

Town Hall

-       How do we make them more appealing?

-       In the Foxhole

-       Food (pie)

-       Belly dancing

  • “I’ve got the moves” –Z. Larsen

-       Present students with the passed Student Project Fund proposals

  • Short & concise
  • Have slideshow of passed proposals running on slides

Enter B. Burhow

Security at Dances

-       High attendance

-       Random chaperones can’t handle all of the security

-       We need to be able to control who can enter the dance

-       It’s so easy for something to happen, at a huge venue with many people.

  • We don’t want people to be freaked out because of shootings
  • Shootings are common, but college campuses are not more common than other places for shootings, they’re just shown in the media
  • Are we inviting more risk to an event than needed when we have tons of fish in a barrel?
    • We’re not going to stop events out of fear

-       One entrance allows for examination of attendees

-       Worker at every other entrance to make sure no doors are being propped, exit or enter

  • That person needs to be able to communicate with the person in charge or the person up front

-       Active shooters usually have an intended victim

  • Bystanders usually get injured in the process
  • Only 4% of bystanders tried to talk the shooter out of doing the act

-       In 25 years we haven’t had any incident at any event

  • If something ever happens, we’re going to say “wish we would’ve done it”

-       We could make this place extra safe, build walls around the entire campus etc. but no one would want to come here because it’s overkill

-       It would be good to have people who have eyes and ears on things

-       Low bar, low cost, simple things are always good ideas

-       Newberg atmosphere is different and we don’t need as much security

-       If there is training for student leaders, it should be all together

  • SPIL Chapel greeters

-        Lighting has been improved and checked, bushes have been trimmed down, there’s security and ResLife people who go around every single night to ensure the safety

-       Students swiping into activities?

  • Downtown Portland needs tickets or student ID cards to enter

-       AC are very well trained
