Developmental Career Tasks for the College Student

SOPHOMORE: RESEARCH
We see sophomores as individuals needing to dig in their heels to provide a firm footing for the next few years at college. It is a year when they need to move deliberately toward a career identity rather than away from it in confusion. They need to do the following:
  • Learn more fully about career planning and decision making by reading a book, taking a course in it, or visiting with Career Services staff
  • Consider concrete plans for an exploratory level internship experience
  • Explore at least three career options in a major/s of their interest (and decide on a major)
  • Learn to use the major career reference guides to research occupations
  • Participate in opportunities to job shadow or do career information interviews
  • Begin to look for people to serve as references
  • Join a professional association as a student to become more familiar with the profession
