Marisa discovered her summer internship with Providence Health System through the foxmail jobs board toward the end of her senior year. As a communications major, Marisa was looking to utilize her communications and marketing skills and education in a real-life setting. Her internship was a paid position in the Marketing & Communications department at Providence. This opportunity allowed her to work heavily on community-sponsored events and on projects including internal newsletters and brochures.
During her internship, Marisa proved herself as a hard-working, professional and well-educated intern and was offered a job in that same department upon completion of her internship. Marisa had already made plans to travel for a few months internationally, but Providence liked her so much they were willing to hold the offer open until she returned from her trip. "You never know where a seemingly temporary opportunity will lead you," she says. "I don't know where I'd be working now had I not pursued that internship. Not only did I secure employment after college, but with an organization whose mission and core values are very much in line with what I stand for, and I was able to discover that by starting out as an intern." In 2004, Marisa became Providence Health System's youngest Communications Coordinator in Oregon.
